How storage is counted
StorageHow storage is counted; Freeing up space.
The storage meter shows the bytes of the files in your library. Folders are free; only file contents count.
Reservations
A running transfer also holds a reservation for the size it is expected to produce, so two transfers cannot both be admitted into space only one of them fits in. That is why the meter can move before a transfer finishes.
A transfer that is cancelled or fails releases its reservation immediately. Nothing stays held by something that is no longer running.
GB means 1,000,000,000 bytes
gettor counts a gigabyte as a thousand million bytes, which is how storage and bandwidth are normally sold. Your operating system may show the same file as slightly smaller because it divides by 1,024 instead.
Freeing up space
Delete what you have already taken. Storage is returned the moment the delete completes.
There is one way to free storage: delete files. It takes effect immediately, and a transfer that was blocked for space can be added again straight after.
Where to look first
- Sort the library by Largest. A single big file usually accounts for more than a long tail of small ones.
- Delete anything you have already downloaded to your own machine — the library is a staging area, not a backup.
- Check for duplicate folders from a transfer that was added twice.
Tip: Take the folder as a ZIP before deleting it if you want to keep a copy. Remember that the download itself counts against your monthly delivery allowance.
