Your first transfer, step by step

Your first transfer

Your first transfer, step by step; Where your files appear when a transfer finishes.

Assuming you have verified your email address, the whole sequence is this.

  1. Copy a magnet link for something you have the right to download — an open-source ISO is a good first test, because it is well seeded and legal everywhere.
  2. Open the dashboard and paste it into the bar at the top. Press Fetch.
  3. Wait for the file details. A folder named after the torrent appears in Your files on the same page.
  4. Open that folder and use Download or Play to request its contents. Adding the torrent alone does not download the files.
  5. Listed files are fetched on demand. Keeping their torrent links does not keep their contents permanently on the server.
  6. Use the library rows to download, rename, move or delete items.

Tip: You do not need to stay on the page. Close the tab, and turn on “Email me when a transfer finishes” on your account page if you would rather be told.

If something stops

A failed card always says why in a sentence. The most common first-time failures are a dead torrent with no seeders, and a torrent larger than the Free plan’s 2 GB limit.

Where your files appear when a transfer finishes

In a folder named after the torrent, inside your library — there is nothing to configure.

gettor does not ask you to choose a destination. When a transfer completes, its files are placed in a folder in your library named after the torrent, preserving whatever folder structure the torrent itself had.

Getting there

  • Look in Your files, directly below the fetch box and active downloads.
  • From elsewhere in the app, choose Library in the header. Open the torrent folder to see its files.

They are yours to rearrange

Once files are in the library they are ordinary items: rename them, move them between folders, make new folders, or delete what you do not want. Nothing is tied to the transfer that produced it, and clearing a transfer from the dashboard never touches the files.

Careful: On the Free plan, completed files are kept for 7 days. Paid plans keep them for as long as the subscription is active.
