Downloading a folder as a ZIP

ZIP downloads

Downloading a folder as a ZIP; “That selection is larger than the zip limit”.

Use Download folder as zip on a folder row, or tick several files and choose the ZIP action from the selection bar. gettor builds the archive and your browser downloads it as a single file.

Why this is often the better option

  • It is one download, so it uses one parallel-download slot rather than many.
  • The folder structure is preserved inside the archive.
  • It is one thing to resume if the connection drops, rather than twenty.

What it counts

The bytes of the archive, against your monthly downloads-and-streaming allowance — the same as downloading the files individually.

Note: An empty selection is refused with “There is nothing to zip in that selection.” Folders with no files in them produce nothing to archive.

“That selection is larger than the zip limit”

Archives are capped. Above the cap, take the files individually or in smaller groups.

Building an archive means streaming every file through one process at once. Past a certain size that stops being a convenience and starts being a way to tie up delivery capacity, so there is a cap.

What to do instead

  1. Tick a smaller group of files and zip those, then repeat.
  2. Or zip subfolders one at a time rather than the parent.
  3. Or download the largest files individually and zip the remainder.

Tip: Sorting the library by Largest makes it obvious which one file is pushing the selection over the cap.
